Rory seemed surprised by his choice of topic.
“It’s… good?” he hedged.
“Is that a question or an answer?” Bernie pushed, raising an eyebrow.
“Answer,” Rory said, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
“I see,” Bernie said, pulling a random file towards himself as if it had any meaning for this meeting. “And how many times have you been disciplined since the semester started two weeks ago?”

“Rory, I want to help you,” he said, as gently as he could, but the boy just curled in even tighter on himself, scowling now. “If you’re not well, you’re not well. That’s fine. You just need to get checked out to make sure it’s nothing major.”
“I don’t need to be checked out,” he snapped. “I skipped a few classes, big whoop.”
“You’ve missed four of mine in a row now,” Bernie replied. “And a glance at your record shows other classes you’ve missed as well, all marked as illness. If you’re not ill, then what’s going on?”
“I’m a brat, I wanted to skip class so I did. Can we get this over with?” Rory replied, leg bouncing up and down.
