All he saw in his mind was everything they had been working for over the last four years, blown right up and dismantled before they ever even got off the ground. Like one of those rockets Tom loved to watch launch, smoking before it even cleared a few feet and the mission called off before anyone could so much as see the stars.
He saw piles and piles of records and shirts and merch being set alight by angry groups of people throughout the country, televised sermons decrying them as responsible for the moral failing of America’s youth, proponents of child abuse and anti-family communists and whatever else they’d come up with.

“Let’s go away for a few days,” he’d nearly pleaded with Mark, “C’mon. We have two weeks before touring starts. You and me, away from all this.”
He didn’t need to ask to know where Tom was thinking, and so it didn’t take a whole lot of convincing to actually get Mark to agree to a few days in San Francisco.
