Summary
'Once again the scratching of the nib of Enjolras’ pen can be heard over the muffled conversation and music leaking into the backroom from the front of the café. When he writes, Courfeyrac notes, Enjolras’ face is transformed in a different way to when he addresses a crowd with bloody rhetoric and calls to arms – he writes as though he is all but overcome by the strange all-consuming serenity of his purpose.
It is quite beautiful. Combeferre, his eyes gentle, has not stopped watching Enjolras since he put pen to paper once more; Courfeyrac can only assume he agrees.'

Summary
'For his part, Enjolras finds there is leadership in this just as there is when he speaks at the head of a crowd, or calls orders above the chaos of a riot, or sends his lieutenants to their work throughout the city.
He glances up from his book to look Courfeyrac in the eye and say, “I plan on completing my work tonight. If you want me to finish it sooner rather than later, I will need you to keep quiet; perhaps I will have Combeferre gag you.”'

Summary
'“Patience,” says Combeferre, squeezing Courfeyrac’s shoulder. Unsaid in that, or so Courfeyrac thinks, is the suggestion that they ought to cherish it, for it will not last: the mud soaking through the seat of his trousers, the throbbing ache in his ribs from the blow of a truncheon, the sight of Combeferre and Enjolras near to him, with their bodies unbroken and their faces free from pain.'
