In another world, perhaps Elizabeth Rose Bloodflame lived. Perhaps instead of dying, she survived, just barely, and instead of a quick end she finds herself locked away. But she has felt what it means to die. She has lain on sterile white sheets spattered with her own blood and she has felt the consciousness fade from her body, felt the ice-cold grip of death circle her but never quite close.
She is sick, tired, and angry. She is weak. She wants to die. She is nothing like the Elizabeth that died when Officer Ceres Fauna shot her in the head, she feels small and out of control.
She doesn't know if it's a curse or a blessing that she still has someone to love her in spite of everything she has become.
