Back then Mutsuki’s understanding of the word had been warped. Home. It no longer tasted rotten as it rolled off his tongue; it hadn’t for a long time. Instead he felt it evoke a bitter nostalgia in the center of his chest that he tried, and failed, to rub away with his hand. He now understood why people spoke of it with such warmth. His parents' house had never been a home to him. It had been hell. Mutsuki had been such a fool to think that he was fit to have something so precious and not destroy it when the stink of that house still stayed buried underneath his skin.
