Aka: How Not to Raise Your Dragon, The Price of Arthur's Happy Childhood.
----
One moment, he was standing in the doorway, waiting for Vi to run past him. The next, he was slamming into the balcony railing, his wings flared out to shield his friends from the blast. The air around them reeked of ozone, and a sound not unlike the tolling of an enormous bell rang in his ears.
The afterimage of blue light was seared into his eyes as he fought the pulse of strange energy that filled him, like someone had charged him with electricity. His whole body throbbed; he dug his claws into the balcony floor, fighting the shift as scales rippled up his spine, down the backs of his arms.
Vi stumbled outside and they stared at each other in mute horror, Al's wings folding but not going away.
They were fucked.
For a split second, it seemed like the worst was over. Then the floor groaned and split, crackling with blue light, and the side of the building crumbled and fell down into the street. Vi peeked over the edge.
He could hear people shouting, then blasting of the alarm, so loud it shook his teeth.
They were so, so fucked.
