The circle broke into smiles and clinks of glasses, congratulating each other. Zuko turned sideways to Mai and flashed her a grin, not a polite one, it felt sly and private. Their eyes met as though sharing a joke no one else could hear.
It hit her harder than she expected. A spark under the ribs.
Down below, his hand grazed hers, and she felt his fingers press into her palm. Then she curled her hands around the folded square of parchment he felt behind.

Zuko reached up, fingers catching the loose strand just before it could touch the chutney on the bao. He tucked it behind her ear with casualness. His hand lingered for a millisecond too long along her jawline, where Mai knew she hadn’t imagined his thumb swiping the edge of her mouth.
Crumb. She told herself quickly. The warmth of the bao still clung to her mouth, and now his scent was wrapped up in it, too.
She moved back a little, reasserting distance. Her expression stayed neutral. The bite was good. The chutney was sweet and tart. The pork was well-spiced. Perfect balance. She hated that she could barely enjoy any of it in the frenzied state of her mind.
It wasn’t lost on him how purposefully she avoided his gaze this entire time.
