Summary
They had both grown up religious, both grown up surrounded by the words of the Scripture. It was the first thing the pair managed to bond over, much to Curly's delight. Sharing the trauma of being raised in a church that hated everything about you was one thing, but learning to leave when it was all you'd ever known was another.
If things had worked out differently, maybe the two could've been closer friends. Perhaps they wouldn't have ended up in this situation together. If he hadn't made the one choice that sealed everyone's fates, then maybe she wouldn't have had a gun pointed at his forehead point-blank.
