Summary
No one had expected to see Commodore, now former, James Norrington in Tortuga when the Pearl had docked in search of new crew. A further shock had been to see him without the pristine uniform and powdered wig. No, the once navy man was in a sorry state, with coat in tatters, wig disheveled and grime clinging to his skin. The animosity that he presented as greeting came as no surprise, but what had been a surprise was the rounded belly that he cradled under one arm.

Summary
The sea is as unforgiving as he feels. Vast, endless and empty. James stands on deck, hands braced against the railing, feeling the saltwater whip across his face. The wind tugs at his coat, but it’s not enough to distract him from the gnawing discomfort that’s settled deep in his stomach. The nausea, his dreadfully persistent companion, comes and goes in waves, and each time it recedes, he feels weaker. His body, like his life, is betraying him.
He hasn’t told a soul about the sickness. The days spent doubled over, the headaches and the growing sense of dizziness are all his to suffer in solitude. His own personal misery.

Summary
[rewrite of imperfection, blooming]
He hadn’t even known about the pregnancy until he had already left Port Royal behind, his uniform donned only as a symbol of what he had once been. There had been no room to fret over the telltale symptoms. The soreness and fatigue had been attributed to his recovery from the wreck, his sickness from the dread that inevitably comes when one is threatened with a court martial.
By the time he’d realised what was happening inside him, it was too late to do anything about it besides add more holes to his belt as his stomach grew from delicate swell to a defined curve.
