She looks at her girls and something inside of her turns, seeing the future that awaits Yelena, the damage already done to Natasha.
It is wrong. She knows that. Her scientific mind cannot discredit even the hardest of truths. And there are two.
One, she has no choice.
(That was stolen from her long ago, before its tattered remains were cut from inside out. Before one of her organs was ripped from her body and thrown into the incinerator, left to burn. Sometimes, she can still smell the fire.)
The second truth is the hardest. It weighs on her - a burden she cannot carry alone yet cannot share, either. Shoulder it all she might, it will crush her. It already has.
For the second truth is that she’s already too late.
