“Interesting. You think you’re hallucinating me?”
Marc snorts ungracefully, his eyes wet at the corners. Even though Valentino is not real, he doesn’t want to give him the satisfaction of crying, not when he’s caught up in his arms, unable to wriggle himself away.
“Yeah, of course. The real you – the real Valentino would have never come all this way just to…what, hold me and sing me to sleep? Come on. Be for real, tío.”
“I wasn’t thinking about singing you to sleep, honestly. I’m quite bad at it, you would laugh at me instead of sleeping.”
Marc humors the hallucination, sticking his tongue out and blowing something akin to a raspberry. It comes out warped, shallow, but he’s made the effort and that’s – quite a lot, considering that he has spent the past thirty-six hours wallowing in self pity, still and unmoving until all of his joints and muscles screamed and spasmed, forcing him to change positions.Marc believes he's tripping on his pain meds when Valentino shows up at his door, determined to help him with a particularly vicious fit of insomnia that has been keeping him awake for thirty-six hours straight.

“Marc. Ciao. I guess you’re feeling much better than the last time?”
Valentino’s words hit him like a wet backhand slap in the face and, for a long beat, he’s under the impression of seeing double, his head spinning and spinning, bile threatening to rise to his throat, the smell of it acrid in his nostrils.
He doesn’t know what would be better. Throwing up or passing out? Maybe both, and not necessary in this order.
What the fuck would you know? he thinks about saying, but when he opens his mouth to speak only a miserable, broken sound comes out, and it feels as if he’s drowning.
Valentino knows what’s going on because he was there to witness him spiraling.
Valentino knows what’s going on because he was there, in his bed, holding him while he blindly refused to accept he wasn’t dreaming.
Valentino knows because Marc wasn’t having a convoluted, far too realistic dream; Valentino knows because he’s the one who has managed to put him to sleep when he hadn’t been sleeping for almost two days straight.It turns out that Marc's lucid dream wasn't exactly a dream, after all.
