Summary
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only answer I have to give," Anaxa replies, his voice suddenly weary. "We are what we are, Phainon. The sum of our choices, our sacrifices. I chose knowledge at every crossroads, and I would choose it again."
"Even knowing where it led? What it cost you?"
“It led me to you, didn’t it?”
Anaxa goes off on his own to the Grove of Epiphany in the middle of the night. Phainon follows. But the clock winds ever downward, and the collapse of all that is good draws near.

Summary
“That’s not childish.” If he had a heart, he’s sure it would be pounding. “That’s the definition of peace. The soul’s greatest desire. It is never too far out of reach.”
“Isn’t it?” Phainon whispers, but his brow gentles, posture relaxing into the chilly night's air. “And what is it you desire, Anaxa?”
A touch, as the baby dromas snuggles close, and for one fleeting moment, an image crosses his thoughts. Watching the sunset, satisfied from a day fulfilled by the gentle touch of companionship and a homecooked meal. They'd have a home, together.

The plan did not include Phainon, who shows up at his door in the middle of the night, asking for a place to stay.
or: Anaxa is dying. Phainon disagrees.
