“Please,” Haley continued, taking a small step forward. “I’m here, Willow. You don’t have to deal with everything alone.”
The words cracked something deep inside of Willow. She had always kept people at a distance. She had always told herself that it was easier to protect her heart, to push others away before they could get close enough to hurt her. But Haley wasn’t just anyone. And maybe that was the problem.
Willow’s lips parted, but nothing came out at first. She felt paralyzed. What do I say? she wanted to scream at herself.
Finally, she found her voice, but it came out so quiet, almost a whisper. “I don’t know what to say, Haley.”
Haley’s face softened, her expression understanding. “You don’t have to say anything right now. But I want you to know that I’m here. Whenever you’re ready.”
