Summary
He expects someone who will treat them with high-handed disinterest and send himself and the men to die without a thought. He expects to have to reign in and train them out of ideas borne of a lot of schooling and politics and not much actual time spent on a battlefield. He’s seen it all before, casual cruelty and sneers down at him for having the audacity to speak. None of those expectations manage to prepare him for Thrain.
----------
Guthred's platoon gains a new commander. Things end up going much further than he expects them too.

Summary
“Have you ever wondered where we’d be, without all of this?” Thrain asks.
“No,” Guthred says, flippant and without a second thought. “Not all of us are hopelessly nostalgic idealists. I’d be working on some other project and not-sleeping in a lab instead of a tent, or we’d be out losing men and going hungry on some other expedition declared by the sages for no good reason. You’d still be honest and noble far past the point of practicality, and I’d still scold you about it every other day.”
----------------
Guthred and Thrain talk, in a rare moment of quiet after the cataclysm. When they find privacy, they do more than talk.
