On my way, Tony texts as he gets into the car waiting outside. Almost immediately, he gets a selfie back that he can’t help but smile at. The light is low in the picture and just like he thought, Steve is in a hoodie and his head is pillowed on the arm of the sofa, and he’s giving Tony a thumbs up and a lopsided grin. He looks so comfortable. He looks like Tony’s.
Tony gazes at the picture for a minute as the car peels off into the glittering traffic before slipping his phone back into his pocket. It’s not baffling that Steve makes him want to do all this stupid adolescent stuff all over again—that’s what this was supposed to be, a fun, silly fling. That’s all this was supposed to be.

Summary
Steve put this serial heartbreaker with money to burn out of his mind until he accidentally spilled champagne all over the front of his shirt. In the middle of stressing over whether or not he could afford to have the shirt cleaned or replaced, Tony smiled at him with warm, crinkling eyes and said, “Whoa, where’s the fire? It's just a shirt.”
And Steve stared and thought, oh, that's why people keep handing him their hearts for him to break, over something that isn’t even real.
