Summary
The platitude fades to a flash of sincerity and it’s there that he picks up on the bead of loneliness to her, reserved for him. His fault, he’s been rushing around all evening while only keeping her in his eyeline. Distance was his old reward, not hers, he has to remind himself of that. Which makes the isolation he found her in more concerning.
