She gazed back up at the cave. “My grandparents used to tell us tales of a woman who emerged from that cave once, as alive as she had been a month earlier. They had buried her body a month earlier, but there she stood once again, flesh and soul intact. And she lived a whole life after that, too, before she once again passed on many years later.”
Taki had awoken early that morning in their bed, alone, looking at the koto on the far side of the room. He hadn’t touched it since Harua had died, but he’d sat up that morning, the remnants of the dream of his mother still there, as he murmured to himself, getting dressed hurriedly. “As alive as she had been a month earlier…”
