Summary
In a world where soulmates are tied to each other by their emotions, Kyojuro has lived much of his life feeling nothing but anger and grief coming from the opposite end of his soul thread.
A chance encounter with Upper Moon Three ends up overturning everything Kyojuro has known, and he’s left to face the uncomfortable fact that the same demon who has hurt and killed thousands is also his soulmate.
On the other end, Akaza finds himself starting to regrow his damaged soul thread after two centuries.

Akaza watches the flex of toned muscle, the bend of his shoulder as it meets his neck, sinew and sun-touched skin. There is the faint silver gleam of an old scar. All of a sudden, the hunger that had lain dormant has arisen to the forefront of Akaza’s mind, and all he can focus on is the beat of Kyojuro’s heart that he can hear in the too-silent inn room, the way he can almost feel Kyojuro’s blood pumping through his veins. And Akaza wonders what it would feel like to sink his teeth into the soft flesh of Kyojuro’s throat.

Summary
For a few moments, they stare at each other before a slow realization dawns on Akaza’s face. He takes a couple of steps back. “Come here.”
Before Kyojuro even knows what he’s doing, his feet are carrying him forward, one step, two steps, three, stopping only when he’s standing right in front of Akaza. The shadow of concern behind his eyes has dissipated into something else entirely. His smile is all teeth, satisfied and a touch devious.
“So that’s what the Blood Demon Art does,” Akaza says.

Akaza wakes up the next morning with Kyojuro on the other end of the bed, and the kitten, who had initially kept a respectable distance at the end of the bed, having traitorously migrated so he’s curled right in the tangle of Kyojuro’s arms.
Akaza gapes at the sight in front of him for a few moments, not sure if he should be shocked, amused, or betrayed.

Summary
In moments like these, Akaza likes to picture how incredulous he would have found this, a century ago. Upper Moon Three, tucked snugly into the alcove of Kyojuro’s body like the final piece of a puzzle. One dreadfully, horrifically sick, the other just barely recovered. It’s so human it hurts. It’s so human and so mundane and so intimately dear, to be able to have and keep the luxury of this.
