Summary
She felt him before she saw or heard him, an aching, bone-deep awareness she was beginning to suspect would never go away. It made her tense up from the base of her neck all the way down to her toes, a second before she did see him, a flash of silver-blond hair in her peripheral vision. Helpless to stop herself, she turned her head.
He was not, she forced herself to observe objectively, at his best. He was more pale and drawn than she remembered, his grey robes were too dark to flatter his eyes and too drab to flatter anything at all, and there was an unbecoming looseness to his limbs and a slackness around his mouth that spoke of too much alcohol already, even though he had only just entered the pub.
She took this all in, catalogued every fault, recognised that he was not the least bit improved, and still found herself unable to look away.
