In his long career, general Washington has won a lot of battles, and has known surrender and defeat as well. He should have known the impending defeat on the first night Alexander Hamilton asks him, quietly, how the general deals with the freezing cold of the winter when the fuel and the blankets are both scarce. When he suggests, with words so carefully chosen that the offer doesn’t offend, that if the general were so willing, if he doesn’t find the idea of sharing a tent and a bed with a lowly aide repulsive, Hamilton would be honored to serve his general in any way possible.

Summary
In all the avenues of his life, George Washington is moving forward, sometimes far more than others, because he is never afraid to admit the lack of knowledge, and to accept advice, and to learn from those who know more even if their position is less. So in the secrets of the night, an art and a craft he previously only dabbled in, he now accepts Hamilton as his teacher.

Summary
Washington has promised to take care of him when Hamilton came to be his aide-de-camp; not aloud, maybe, but this is how he treats all his boys, his family. Although Hamilton refuses all his attempts to be closer, his kindness and affection that other boys welcome so; while they are happy with the role of his surrogate sons, Hamilton shakes it off angrily every time. This is different, though. This is where he doesn’t have to fight his aching heart over sending them out to fight, and to die. Where he doesn’t have to be stern, to command, to restrict. With Alexander, at least by night, he can be kind, and indulging, and gentle; his restrictions are welcome, his sternness required or brushed away at will.
