Summary
In a new time, a new home, Jenny and Vastra are happy, living and loving and looking after their children and chiding Strax for trying to blow up the Christmas tree every year. But a letter brings bad news; although it’s been twelve years for them, it’s been twenty-eight for Jenny’s childhood friend from Ireland, and he is requesting that she and Vastra come back to 1921 – with Strax and their children, who are now old enough to help them with their investigations – to assist in the investigation, with their intellect in these dealings, of Mr Matthew Crawley’s tragic and untimely death. But when they arrive, something puzzles the seven; is it them, or does it feel like there’s something more going on, just like John Bates and Tom Branson think?
---
“Welcome to Downton,” the Earl of Grantham said with a sad sort of smile. “I hope you will enjoy your stay, Madame Vastra, Miss Flint.”
“A shame it couldn’t have been under happier circumstances,” Vastra replied with a gracious bow of her head, making sure that the veil covered her face. Jenny stepped out of the car, leaning heavily on the cane that concealed her katana; she looked over at John – blimey, he’d gotten old – and he winked.
