The whole house has been crazy for the past month, getting ready for today. Livia’s glad for this moment of perfect calm, between the florists’ departure and the caterers’ arrival. It’s quiet now, though, as if holding its breath. The boys are already gone ahead to the church with the kids, and Connie and her friends are having a last-minute smoke, so it’s just Livia at the foot of the stairs, looking washed out because she’s not quite as dark as Fredo and Connie and the colour of her bridesmaid’s dress wasn’t chosen with flattery in mind.
