Summary
“It’s here!” Somebody yelled, pointing at the Skyfaced Clock affixed to the Deucalion’s facade.
The dusky twilight blue of The Gloaming faded to sapphire, to navy, and then to a rich, hollowed out black.
The last time this had happened, Jupiter had been sitting on the roof of the Deucalion with Rosie, Bertram, and little baby Jack, snuggled into a picnic blanket. The Clocksmiths had predicted that it would be the last day of the Age, and they had gathered together to watch the clocks change all over the city. And it had happened, just like it was supposed to. Everything had.
He was sure Jack didn’t have a clue what was going on, but the trio of adults had embraced. They had cheered and laughed and celebrated Bertram’s survival through another Age. Another Eventide where he didn’t have to fear death.
He wished that were the situation now, but as the bells rang and the Skyfaced Clock changed, Jupiter felt a swift punch to his gut.
The bells were ringing for Eventide.

“Ladies, ladies-” Lloyd placed his hands on the table, “We all look at our partners a normal amount. And spend a normal amount of time gossiping at this table. Meredith didn’t hang around with you guys?”
He put one finger on the table, tracing circles as an aid to his mental list of things to tell his handler.
“We tried, we really did.” Blaine shrugged, “But she just… didn’t want to.”
Cyra’s face curled into an expression of sympathy, “I don’t think she liked the party life. She always looked so uncomfortable.”
“I felt bad.” Gwen frowned, “She looked like a little caged bird sometimes.”
“Oh.” He frowned, taking another sip from his drink, “That’s awful.”
“Yeah, she-” Gwen began, but was interrupted by a scoff from Ivy’s direction.
They all turned to look at her, eyes slightly wide.
As far as Lloyd was aware, Ivy and Meredith had never crossed over. He and Meredith had never crossed over, and he had arrived there before Ivy did. Or at least, he thought that much.

Completely lost in his thoughts, Jupiter didn’t notice the wall rushing up to meet him until he had crashed directly into the cavernous entrance of the dragonriding arena. He swore, loudly, and crashed to the ground, dropping his books and papers everywhere.
He lay down in defeat. Maybe he wasn’t meant to get to class today.
As he was wallowing in his misery, a shadow crossed over his vision.
“You alright?”
Suddenly, he was face to face with a young scholar with warm skin and dark curls.
“Uh, yeah.” Jupiter grabbed the hand he was offered and let her help him sit up, “Well, I am now. I won’t be in about five minutes when my Wintersea Republican Politics teacher murders me for being late.”

He nodded firmly, “I do.”
“Good. Somebody will come find you when the parade is over to get your count.” The official gave him a reassuring nod and then disappeared into the crowd, probably to deliver more candles.
Jupiter sat back down in their little circle. The rest of his Unit had sat up and leaned forward when the official arrived. Eight pairs of eyes fixed on the Nightbeacon as Jupiter delicately removed it from its box and then removed the box of matches next to it.
They stared for a second at the intricate detailing on the candle, gazes eventually falling on the name engraved at the base.

As a cub growing up on the streets, her focus was always on what she was eating next. What she would be able to scavenge, if anything.As a cagefighter, it had been how to win her next match. How to earn her next meal.
Now, her biggest problem was organising a team of well-paid staff who wanted nothing more than to follow her instructions.
She didn’t even have to do much cleaning anymore, she mostly just lounged around and checked on her staff occasionally, just to make sure they were doing their jobs.
