It was through witnessing the three acts of Hat Guy's life and talking with the main characters of each chapter did he realize that perhaps a dragon and a puppet are not so different after all.

All light dimmed from the words that tumbled from Durin’s mouth, as if they were shooting stars whose trails faded in the endless sky. "I don't understand. Does the topic of dying not really bother you?"
"I'm not afraid of dying."
"But I'm afraid of you dying." Compared to the firmness of the lines he heard, his were soft as the moonlight that bathed his young face. "You're my first friend and a very important one to me. I still want to visit places and do a lot of things with you. So, I hope you cherish your life more because it matters." He hoped his smile would be enough to pry open the wall before him. "Even if it doesn't matter to you, it matters to somebody else."An alternate scenario in which Durin talks to the Wanderer after he offers his core to be used against Dottore + Durin crying after Wanderer wakes up.

“Hat Guy, are you really okay?”
He was fine. Okay, he was not. But he should be. Especially when those puppy dog eyes would start tearing up if he told the truth, so he hid it for as long as he could.
Eventually, Durin would know that he had been lied to.
Still, just as always, the dragon stayed by his friend’s side. He remained with him when the ‘poison’ from Dottore’s projectile caused Hat Guy’s core to work overtime in flushing it out, resulting in a feverish-like state.
“You’re going to be okay…” Durin whispered to the puppet and to himself as he continued the soothing motion of running his fingers through the other’s hair.
