Ariel remembered standing in the dirt, shocked at the almost comical image before her: the sorcerer’s leather shoes, smoking and charred in front of her. Her gaze flicked between them and the sorcerer’s body, ten feet away.
The crew chief and his assistants were tasked with bringing her back to the Fright Zone. They stopped for the night at one of the Horde border waystations.
And there, Ariel finds unexpected help.

Akrash stared at the mirror. He didn’t like being reminded of Gideon. He liked thinking of himself as Akrash. Gideon was a useless failure. Akrash was… someone else.
But Akrash was not the one who stared out of the mirror.
He spent hours in the library, attempting to combine Halfmoon shaping spells with the Osirian genetic magic. Without testing, with a faith born of desperation, he finally made the attempt.

Summary
Tonight was the first eclipse of spring, a night of celebration in Mystacor. One of the few truly dark nights of the year. The Ritual of Mirrors renewed the wards.
After the ceremony, the city was filled with dancing and laughter. Music spilled from open balconies. People feasted and exchanged gifts under lanterns that shimmered like constellations.
Akrash had lost track of Ariel early on. Last he saw her, she was with Khedir.
It was very late. Third watch of the night. Uncertain footsteps zig-zagged down the hall, thumping into the wall. Was she drunk?
She didn’t usually drink.
