Summary
Ethan is the passive voice—subject absent, action complete, object suspended in midair. He is always the one chosen, infected, saved, abandoned. By. By. By. A man who perpetually receives action.
Leon is the past perfect—too many things already ended, yet still occupying space in the sentence. Raccoon City ended twenty-six years ago, but he is still there. Still in the city. Still on that night.
They meet in a sentence that needs no tense.
Ethan Winters was born in Louisiana in 1984. In 2017, he was killed in the Baker estate in Louisiana. In 2021, he truly died in a village in Romania. The mold preserved his consciousness, then dissolved him after he finished everything. This follows no grammatical rule.
In 1998, Leon Scott Kennedy learned to shoot in Raccoon City. He was twenty-one that year. For the twenty-seven years that followed, he has been learning how to forget. This, too, is a grammatical error—past perfect means the action was already completed at some point in the past, but twenty-seven years later, thirty years later, that action continues within him.
So they meet.
