Summary
Nie Huaisang did not hear the first time his name was called from the pristine stage outside the city hall. The world had narrowed and stilled into something not quite real. He was…unfocused. Unaware. Which was a very bad thing considering what was happening a mere few feet in from of him. It wasn't until he turned his head and saw the faces of the people around him, all of them fixed on him with expressions ranging from relief to ashen-faced horror, that he realised something had happened.

Summary
The looming cloud over both their heads. Namely, the fact that they would be going into the arena a tomorrow with twenty two other people who wanted them dead, and were very likely to die in the next couple weeks. Also the fact that Wanyin knew damn well he wasn't coming home. Huaisang didn't know that, of course he didn't, but the dread gnawed at Wanyin's gut, creating a hollow emptiness in his core. He had two weeks left at most. For all he knew it could have been a matter of days. Even worse was the thought that people were going to be watching all over the country. His parents, his brother…
He was so busy thinking about it that he jumped a bit when Huaisang suddenly asked, "Are you scared?"

"Wanyin!"
Wanyin thought Huaisang might have sounded closer that time. He hoped so.
"Huaisang!" He shouted again, hand covering his mouth to try and filter the air. He took an unsteady step in the direction of the voice, "Huaisang, I'm-"
Then his foot slipped on something he couldn't see and would never find out. With a shout, he went tumbling down a hill he hadn't seen in the haze, rolling head over foot through patches of dried grass and leaves. He felt like he was falling for very long time, though with how muddy his perception of time had become, he couldn't be sure. Long enough that by the time he stopped, he didn't think he could even begin to reorient himself. Fuck. When he got back to the Nightless City he was going to fucking kill someone.
