Summary
If they had been on good terms, they would have had separate bedrooms and perhaps after a couple of nights alone, Bertha would have risked scandalising the servants by creeping across the corridor in her nightgown to lie in her husband’s arms for a while. As it is, they’ve barely spoken for months, George would no more open his arms to her than he would to a deadly viper, and their daughter is scheming.
