Summary
Reiner shrank, sobs small and hastened. Bertholdt tightened his hold. Reiner's tears and Reiner's saliva soaked themselves into his nightshirt. He felt like a young mother soothing a baby in a hostel— A big baby. A big, brawny baby who kept threatening to get them in trouble.
Bertholdt struggles to soothe Reiner, crying in his sleep. When his guilt-filled wails threaten to compromise their secrecy, Bertholdt resorts to the only thing he can think of to calm him down. (His body knows something is wrong. He feels sick. But he loves him so.)

Summary
Bertholdt kept his eyes down in the mess hall as of late. The sight of his "comrades," his unbroken, infantile little comrades, chattering and laughing and squabbling amongst themselves, set an unnameable pit in his stomach.
(He never left that room full, no matter how much he ate.)
Bertholdt's body changes in the weeks following his encounter with Reiner in the washroom. What starts off as a minor ailment escalates into an infection that increasingly consumes his life, and which he struggles to keep hidden from his (should-be) classmates. Under the suffocating environment of the 104th, Bertholdt's relationship with his comrades frays, his mind strains, and lines that ought to have remained solid are blurred.
Something gnaws at him.
And it will not go away.
