Summary
Six has no idea what he's doing.
Not when he tugs a shivering, half-asleep Claire into their fourth safe house in the last two weeks. Not when he breaks into the nearest grocery store to stock up on food with actual nutrients that a growing thirteen-year-old needs because his stash is running dangerously low. And certainly not when she tries to hide how she cries herself to sleep at night, fingers curled tight around a polaroid photograph of her uncle.
His hands are calloused, scarred, and covered in blood. They know the shape of a pistol grip or a knife handle, the feel of a nose broken against knuckles or a windpipe crushed beneath fingers. These hands have destroyed too many lives to count, have taken, and taken, and taken with no remorse or hesitation. These hands don't remember how to be gentle.
They haven't had to be in twenty-six years.

Ryland's face scrunches up once more. "I mean, space is cool but I don't want to go there. It's so cold and dark and empty." He shudders like he's trying to shake off the feeling of it. "But I don't think I could be a vet. I don't want to see animals die, it's so sad!"
"So what else is there if you're not an animal doctor? An animal collector?"
A giggle bursts from Ryland's mouth and Colt lets it warm him up from the inside out, burning away the darkness of bad memories.
What do I want to be when I grow up? Colt thinks, and the answer is easy this time. Somebody who still makes you laugh.

"Hey, firefly. Been a while."
That seems to snap Ryland out of whatever daze he was caught in, but instead of realization, a sort of manic disbelief sweeps over his face.
Nervous, bordering-on-hysterical laughter slips from his lips as he shakes his head. Six watches the glasses dip further down his chin, passively impressed they manage to hang on.
"Nope, absolutely not," he chokes out and slams the door in their faces.
