Wally stares at him for a second, and then something in his expression shifts— confusion turning into something like understanding.
“Oh,” he says softly. “Dick, did you—” His mouth twitches. “Did you have a nightmare?”
Dick just stares at him.
Wally huffs out a laugh, fond and disbelieving all at once. “Baby,” he says, reaching for him carefully this time, like Dick might bolt. “Were you seriously dreaming about me marrying her?”
Dick doesn't answer. Because he knows what he experienced— knows how the way his heart broke knowing he will never be with Wally.
So if this isn't a dream, and this definitely isn't reality, then what is it exactly?
Unless…
Dick ends up in an alternate universe where he’s married to Wally.

One frame in particular catches his eye.
Wally is grinning in a tuxedo, a woman tucked against his side in white. And there, standing beside them with one hand on Wally’s shoulder and a champagne glass in the other, is Dick.
Best man.
Dick stares at the photo, pulse roaring in his ears.
It’s not just any woman.
Linda.
Wally’s ex.
No.
No, no, no.
It can’t be.
Can it?
Something happened.
Something has to have happened.
Wait.
He got hit last night on patrol.
By some kind of ray gun that looked like it belonged to Buzz Lightyear— and Nightwing had a hard time keeping it together at the time— but nothing really did happen immediately except for the migraine pounding behind his eyes. He’d just assumed the thing was defective.
So is this some kind of nightmare?
Or had he somehow woken up in a world that had never been his to begin with?
Dick wakes up in an alternate universe where Wally isn't his.

In Dick’s embrace, he can almost forget how much it hurts.
Almost.
Wally swallows hard and pulls away just enough to look at Dick while resisting the urge to bury his face in Dick’s neck forever.
“Dick…”
“Yeah?”
Wally chews on his bottom lip, suddenly reconsidering. Dick doesn't push. He never does. He simply waits, patient as ever, until Wally finally blurts out—
“Linda broke up with me.”
After Linda breaks up with Wally, Dick is there to pick up the pieces.
