Leo’s jaw dropped and he gawked at Jason. “Oh my god, dude, really?”
Jason startled, and Piper whipped her head up. “What? What’s his deal?”
“You’re jealous!” Leo accused, pointing a finger with no small amount of vindication.
Flushed cheeks went pale before flaring back up. “I– What? No, that’s– What are you even–”
“Oh my god, you’re totally right, he is,” Piper giggled without malice, not that she ever needed malice to make someone squirm.
“I am not jealous,” Jason seethed, which was of course the behavior of an incredibly un-jealous person.
Leo shared a look of incredulous delight with Piper before he turned back to Jason. “You know, if you wanted in, you could have just told us; we would have included you.”
Piper frowned curiously. “Leo, I don’t think that’s what he–”
“That’s exactly what I meant!” Jason interrupted. “I’ve just… felt left out of your petty crime ring.”

“Besides, Piper’s been thinking about moving back with her dad the past few months,” Jason added. “She’s not really sure what’s gotten into him, but he told her that he wants to take a break from Hollywood for a while, so he can properly be there for her last few years of high school.”
“That’s really cool,” Leo said slowly, eyes narrowing in suspicion. “But you don’t think–”
“She took Coach Hedge to visit him a couple weeks before you got here to do a sniff test,” Jason reported. “Tristain McLean is officially monster-free. Piper said she figures he just watched one too many movies about workaholic dads abandoning their families or something.”
“Awesome. I hope that works out,” Leo grinned, letting himself relax properly. His eyes sparkled and he gave Jason a challenging grin. “Guess that means you’re stuck with one on one bro time with yours truly.”
Jason’s face softened with a fondness he only ever showed Leo. “You know, I think I’ll live.”
Leo felt his cheeks flush, though he couldn’t say why, exactly. He just grinned at Jason with breathless anticipation. “I think I will, too.”

Summary
Jason landed and found himself in a city, not entirely unlike Scala ad Caelum, but built with dark worn brick instead of brilliant white marble and full of neon lights instead of gleaming bronze. Really, he supposed, it wasn’t actually all that similar, but there was something to it that felt familiar. He knew that this world was right. This was where he’d find Love and Creation.
Or, rather, Love and Creation would find him.
Jason knew what he was expecting to find. He was expecting to find a pair of Keybearers, stern and serious who carried their part of their shared destiny on their shoulders. He wasn’t expecting perfection, Foreteller Lupa had warned him that only Wisdom had his level of training, but he was expecting capability.
He was not expecting to be thrown to the ground when two almost concerningly small bodies jumped out a window and landed on him. He wasn’t expecting Keybearers who had only managed to summon their weapons for the first time that day when they were running from Shadow Heartless. He wasn’t expecting blunt accusations or shouting or laughter or teasing. In short he was not expecting Piper and Leo.

“Ugh. I guess this means I should probably go ask him out.”
“Probably, yeah,” Leo agreed. “Like, if you told him you don’t like being asked out, he’s way too noble to do it anyway.” Piper still looked like she was being asked to walk the plank, so Leo cut in. “Look, why don’t I take him on a test drive?”
Piper blinked at him. “What? You’re gonna date him instead? Be my guest.”
“No, I’m not going to date him,” Leo said, rolling his eyes. “I’m just gonna… put him through his paces. I’ll tell him it’s a test and we’ll see if he really has what it takes to be the boyfriend we think he is. That way if he is mid, you don’t have to waste your time with him.”
“But you’re okay with wasting your own time?” Piper asked. “You’re willing to just date him without all the gross kissing benefits?”
“I think I’ll survive being on the receiving end of Jason Grace’s attention for a few months, even if we don’t have the ‘gross kissing benefits’” Leo soothed. “Besides, if it sucks, I can bail. I’m just testing to see if he’s worth your time and effort. If he proves he’s not, I have no reason to stick around.”

Then, finally, the door bell jingled around seven and Jason felt his heart soar. He quickly walked out to the lobby and sure enough, Leo Valdez was crouched there, scratching Snowball behind the ear and cooing, “You are the single cutest tattoo parlor mascot in the world. I bet you’re very well aware of that, aren’t you?”
Jason cleared his throat and Leo looked up with a grin. In person, it was even more mischievous, teeth very obviously crooked in ways that they hadn’t been on film. His Instagram was also apparently out of date because in addition to the ear and nose rings Jason had seen, Leo had a pair of sparkly gold snake bites and a bar through one eyebrow. Jason smiled back. “Hi, there.”
“Cute dog, huh?” Leo asked, gesturing at Snowball. “You here to see her?”
Jason blinked and furrowed his brow. “Uh, no?”
Leo’s eyes widened. “Oh, you’re here for a tattoo? First one I’m guessing?”
“What?”

Leo stood there, tears steadily rolling down his cheeks. “I hate you,” he whispered before the petals of marigolds started floating past his own lips.
Jason just gave him a sad smile. “Me, too.”
But that was three years ago, back in the fifth year of Jason’s sickness when it was starting to get really bad. He’d gone another two years coughing up florist shops before being hospitalized, at which point Leo finally had his breakdown. He’d begged Jason not to leave him, promised he’d do anything to keep him, and even confessed the desperate love he’d been whispering to Venters for years. Then, with IVs stuck in his arms and a breathing tube shoved up his nose, Jason finally relented. He held Leo close, kissed away his fat, ugly tears and said the three most beautiful words imaginable. They’d kissed and promised to live the rest of their lives together, the end.

“No! Don’t you move an inch!” the lady hissed, and Leo felt every last one of his joints lock in place. The lady didn’t look nearly as friendly now. Her eyes were molten gold, her hair an inferno, and her fingers curled into claws as she stalked forward. “I’ve been tracking you for days, if you think you’re getting away that–”
The lady, monster, thing cut herself off with a choked, gurgling noise and both she and Leo looked down to see the end of a golden javelin poking out of the center of her chest. The world stood still for a moment before she exploded into gold glitter, revealing the man who had attacked her.
He was a grownup, older than his teacher, but not older than Matt. He had fluffy blond hair that fell down around his ears, and he had the bluest eyes Leo had ever seen. He was also big, like, football-player-big. His shoulders were probably three times as wide as Leo’s and he was so, so tall. His face was twisted up in a deadly serious expression, until his gaze landed on the other person still in the alley, and his eyes went wide. “Leo?”

Leo pulled back, though he brought a hand up to cup Jason’s cheek, brushing his thumb over the single dried tear track. “Your love tastes like salt tonight,” he said softly. “Tell me why?”
“It‘s nothing that concerns us tonight,” Jason informed him, gripping Leo’s wrist and kissing his palm. It suddenly struck him that he might not get another chance like this, so he kissed him again and again and again, up and down each long, crooked finger until his lips were blackened with his fervor. He pressed his face into Leo’s hand and took deep, shaky breaths, in and out, as he tried to memorize every second of their moment together.
“You can’t ask me to not be concerned, then kiss me like you’re waiting for someone to take me away.” Leo narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “Wait. No. You’re waiting for someone to take you away, aren’t you?”
The words hung heavy in the salty air, Jason unwilling, or perhaps unable, to lie.
