One might ask why Drew was going to all this trouble in the first place. The answer was embarrassingly on-brand for him: it was for May Maple.
She had seemed sad the last time they met. He thought that was odd, considering she had just won the Icirrus Ribbon yesterday. So he asked her what was wrong.
“Promise you won’t laugh?” She asked.
“Only if you promise it won’t be funny,” he quipped. He soon realized that he misread the situation, as she genuinely looked hurt at the remark. “I’m kidding. I won’t laugh, promise.”
“... I had an awful Mago Berry at breakfast.”

Summary
Back when May travelled to the Icy Rock to evolve her Glaceon, she spent the night at the Snowbound Lodge. It was a bed and breakfast located along Route 216 run by a sweet elderly couple. They charged a nominal fee, just enough to cover the cost of ingredients for meals – they told her that helping out travellers and hearing stories of their adventures was the real reason they kept the place open, anyway.
So when Drew said he wanted to visit Snowpoint City, May gave the lodge her full endorsement. The accommodations were cozy, the food was hearty, and the hosts were delightful. So the two of them made their trek up north with the destination in mind.

May and Drew spend the night at the Snowbound Lodge. Their room has two beds. Somehow, they still end up sharing.

Summary
Visiting a new region or sparring with a strong rival were common ways for coordinators to prepare for the next season. Combining both tactics ensured that Drew would maximize the potential of his Pokemon.
So training in Lumiose City with May was a strategic choice. It definitely wasn’t an excuse to take a “lovey-dovey couples retreat in the most romantic city in the world”, no matter what Harley said.

As soon as he made the joke, he worried he had crossed a line. While he wasn’t actually expecting a dowry, marriage had been the reason he was so worried. They had only been dating for 2 months, but Drew already knew that May was the woman he wanted to marry. He had suspected as much even before they started going out.
He hadn’t told her. It was way too soon for that sort of conversation. But if Norman and Caroline were to become his in-laws someday, he wanted to be on good terms with them.

May was really craving a Durin Smoothie. Then she thought about how that was a weird craving, even for her. Then she thought: could it be a pregnancy craving?
She quickly did the mental math. Her last period was just over a month ago, so the timing worked out. Were pregnancy cravings even a symptom you could get at this stage? Despite all the research and preparation they had been doing, May had no clue.
