Summary
Commander Shepard didn't grow up dreaming of the stars. She grew up in the lower wards of New York, learning that survival means never letting anyone get close enough to hurt. The Alliance gave her a purpose, missions, rank—forged her into a weapon. It was enough, until Saren, until the hunt for a rogue Spectre pulled her into an alliance with an asari archaeologist who refused to be pushed away and breached her walls.
This is the story of the woman behind the legend: a street kid who became a soldier, a soldier who became a symbol, and the slow, unwilling process of learning that letting someone in doesn't have to mean losing them. Follows the events of Mass Effect 1, with original characters, deepened backstory, and a few sharp edges of its own.
Content Note: This story deals throughout with trauma, grief, survivor’s guilt, and loss.

Summary
Shepard spent most of her life believing that loving someone only gave the universe another way to take them away.
Liara T’Soni made her question that.
In the aftermath of Saren’s defeat, Shepard has finally begun allowing herself something she never expected to have: someone who stays. But the galaxy has never cared much for what Shepard wants, and the next fight will demand more from her than another impossible mission.
As human colonies begin disappearing and an unfamiliar enemy moves in the shadows, Shepard is pulled into a war where loyalties are uncertain, old friends have lives of their own, and trust may be more dangerous than any weapon.
She knows how to survive a battlefield.
What she doesn’t know is how to hold on to the life she finally allowed herself to want.
