Summary
the only thing ryland gentry was good at besides science was making good decisions, not making mistakes, and he prioritized that over everything else. maybe this mindset overtook his life enough for him to get to senior year without really learning how to make friends and he was now headed to college, alone, to most likely do the same thing, sure, but he liked being perfect. he had to be perfect to be worth something, right?
well, someone has to be there to catch him when he slips, and it was always going to be his older brother courtland.
AKA: colt convinces ryland to go to his first and only high school party over christmas break before they graduate. ryland, now drunk and left alone, is NOT having a good time, so he decides to call courtland to come pick him up. arguing via a nokia cell phone and emotional conversations about expectations and self worth ensue.
