If he had half a mind of self-preservation left, he would have called Ryland, and he knew that Ryland would drive down from San Francisco to San José in a heartbeat. But, like with Jody, he didn’t want to be seen by Ryland.
If it was just himself, he could pretend that anything before the fall was simply some kind of lucid dream. Colt didn’t have to think about the people he was hurting with his radio silence. He didn’t need to consider what it would look like to the people who loved him if he stopped inviting them to watch parties of old action movies, stopped calling randomly during the lunch breaks he tracked diligently in a calendar, stopped leaving the house as much if not just to go to the gym or work or grocery shopping.

Ten months after Colt's accident, he found himself struggling to figure out who he was. At the same time, he'd rather eat his own shoe than ask for help. Everybody probably thought he was pathetic enough already, so who cared if he mistreated himself?

Summary
Colt clings to Ryland’s side and together they take a step forward, and then Court is sandwiched between them, and the warmth encasing him is so instantaneous and familiar that it’s as if he can feel the pit in his heart closing.
They stay like that for somewhere between five minutes and an hour. The sky is almost just as dark as it was when they arrived there, and for all the world it feels as if time has frozen.

Roughly two months after Colt and Jody get back from Australia, Ryland finds a mysterious note in his kitchen.
Maybe his big brother isn't as dead as he thought.

Summary
Ryland knows what it means that he has suddenly stopped looking forward to a future. He knows what it means that he had cleaned his entire apartment to a degree that had seemed suspicious even to himself. He knows that the utter calm which had fallen over him like a blanket, present even as he ruminated on his failings, should have been the bridge between his subconscious making the decision for him and his conscious self going through with it.
He has failed at most things in life.
He will not fail at this.

After Ryland's UNESCO conference incidence, he's not sure there's a life left for him. Everything—from his dad abusing them to Court leaving to this—has been a result of Ryland ruining his own life. He's prepared not to let it happen again.
