Qifrey’s voice was bright.
Olruggio had made it just in time–a half hour until visiting hours were over. He had practically run to the medical wing, and had almost begged the nurse at the desk if he could make a quick visitation. She had been on duty when he had come in earlier to get his split knuckles bandaged, and nodded her assent, bewildered as she was seeing the young man still in such a harried state.
But the delight in Qifrey’s greeting had been worth the day’s delays and grievances.
Qifrey returns to the Great Hall after a life-affirming surgery in the capital city and city of healers, Ezrest. Olruggio, who has been anxiously awaiting his return, faces an unfortunate interruption before their happy reunion.

Summary
Qifrey tensed. He did not remember his real home, where he had come from, who he had belonged to. But home was something one could feel, wasn’t it? A sort of rightness, as if some long-lost key had finally clicked into place and unlocked a part of him that had been closed off.
“Maybe,” said Qifrey. He toyed with the long black ribbon that flowed from the tip of his hat. “It feels right, somehow. I don’t know. But maybe this is all just because you’re here with me.”
It was Olruggio’s turn to stiffen. “Oh, huh, really?” he said. He reached up to rub at the back of his neck. Qifrey watched him carefully. “Being with me feels… right?”
Qifrey and Olruggio, not yet fully-fledged witches, visit Kalhn to celebrate Hallow’s Day, also known as the witch’s new year. That night, Olruggio tries to make a confession in the light of the bonfire flames. Qifrey wishes, more than anything, that he could hear it.

Summary
Qifrey picked up the stem and twirled it between his thumb and forefinger. The little blue flowers winked back at him.
“I saw it on the side of the road, walking back this way,” said Olruggio. He was in the midst of unpacking his bags on the kitchen counter, having been the one in charge of shopping for the week. “I thought, ‘hey, who does that blue remind me of?’”
He was smiling. Qifrey was not. Regardless, he forced one. “Thank you,” he said. His voice was tight. “It’s beautiful.”
Olruggio brings Qifrey a gift. Qifrey can't accept it.
