Summary
Nine year old Riddle Rosehearts moves with his mother to a new home, a large manor on a small island. There's no way to leave except the front gate, which is far too large and always locked. His bedroom door has several locks on it, and he's trapped on the third floor. There's no way for him to ever repeat his mistake from earlier that year.
When Riddle begins to observe creatures on the beach that appear in the night, he thinks he'll never encounter them up close. Until one day, he does, and massively gets into trouble for it. Despite this, the creature, a young merman named Floyd Leech, becomes Riddle's only companion on this island.
As the two get closer, new feelings start to bloom in the young Rosehearts, feeling he's never felt before. And soon, Floyd begins to propose a strange idea. What if Riddle could leave the island, and his mother, forever?
