“Well, Hollander might be boring”, Cliff says. “but he’s like, really pretty, right?”
Cliff doesn’t know what he expected Ilya’s initial reaction to be, but it’s definitely not the look that ends up landing on his face. Ilya gawks at Cliff as if he had just suggested replacing their drinks with a pipe bomb instead, his eyes wide and brows furrowed with bewildered disbelief.
“What?” Ilya blurts out flatly.
“Hollander. He’s pretty”, Cliff reiterates with an easy shrug. “Y’know, for a dude.”
“You think Hollander is pretty?”
Cliff frowns. “I mean, yeah? Don’t you?”
Cliff Marleau has an inkling that his good friend Ilya Rozanov might just swing both ways, and he’s determined to let Ilya know that he’s an ally, be it by continuously mentioning his lesbian sister – who he once shared a womb with so y’know, they’re close – or by acknowledging that Shane Hollander is, objectively, very pretty.
Cliff doesn’t expect the latter to land him in a threesome with two of the best players in the MLH but hey, despite the mild sexuality crisis that it manifests, he’s not mad about it.

Cliff peers down to look at Hollander. His face is still flushed, hair sticking to his forehead, his pretty brown eyes a little glazed – lingering pleasure overtaken by a sudden sense of uncertainty.
“How are you so calm about this? Being into guys.”
After hooking up with both Ilya and Shane Hollander and subsequently realizing that he may in fact be bisexual, Cliff’s life more or less goes back to normal without further fuss or any sort of existential crisis he might’ve been expecting.
Then after the season ends and Ilya has returned to Russia, Cliff receives an unexpected text from Hollander requesting a meet-up. This time Cliff expects the sex, but not the conversation that happens after.

Ilya, finally having succeeded in grabbing the bottle opener, shoots a mildly surprised look towards Cliff. “Yes”, he says, shrugging as he sits down again, subsequently depriving Cliff of the opportunity to further ogle at his ass. “So?”

Cliff, deeply concerned about the lack of attention Ilya’s renowned ass has been getting in the hands of Shane Hollander, heroically pledges to change that – because what else are friends for if not a friendly round of anal sex while reminiscing about a shared hook-up?
