Summary
"Now, what can I do for you this evening, Doctor?" She leveled Stevens with a piercing stare, one eyebrow raised.
Being under that sharp gaze made Stevens’s heart beat irregularly fast, sending a feverish warmth through her veins. Trying to recover her focus, Stevens looked down at the folio in her hands. "I’m dropping this off on behalf of Dr. Wilson. It's an autopsy record that may be pertinent to tomorrow’s proceedings," she explained, struggling to look Adler in the eye.
Whatever this odd reaction was, Adler had seemingly caught onto it. She rounded the desk slowly, approaching with the grace of a cat stalking its prey.

Summary
But like the needle of a compass, her wandering gaze inevitably slid back to Irene and remained there, caught in a current of force Courtney could hardly understand. She wore a simple skirt and a plain blouse, but the amber light turned her golden, catching on every edge and plane. She could not have looked more extraordinary.
A hunger tugged at Courtney’s gut, as if she’d been starving these past four days. Before her was the only thing that could satiate the gnawing need, a desire so foreign to her, yet so primal and strong that it moved her body without any input from her higher mind.
—
Courtney pays Irene a visit.
