Some musings on Red, because he’s one of the (many) background characters in Beanstalk who tried to steal the show and would have managed it if everyone else hadn’t been so successful at stealing it back…spoilers for Echoes.

Summary
At about the time I wrote my Red piece, I started this one for our other lovable, unusually-named, show-stealing side character, and it took a lot longer to finish..minor spoilers for Beanstalk, none for Echoes.

Summary
When Rupert Hammersfield the Seventh was declared missing, presumed dead, Rhones stepped quietly into his role as general support to the headmaster, who had gone grey and grim with grief. The piles of extra paperwork on his desk were not welcome, but Rhones was used to gritting his teeth and getting on with the job that needed doing - hard rides through heavy rain to answer summons, striding into a nest of Things, shaking the hands of young heroes when they graduated and set out on their first League duty, knowing some of them would never come home again.

Summary
Francis Uyeda walked through the Academy’s hated gates when he was eighteen, because there was something here worth saving from itself. His mother’s face had been stern and calm on the dockside, and when she kissed his forehead and wished him luck he could see her folding in and in on herself. One of the younger kids had been crying. One of his sisters had stubbornly refused to speak to him since he sent off the forms, and another had done the same once his acceptance had come back. His brother had made him promise to say hi to the Rangers.
He had lived most of his life on a ship, and now the ground lay still beneath his feet. He braced himself against it and stumbled when he adjusted his balance thoughtlessly for a shift that wasn’t coming. The ground was still, stable, and he felt off balance for weeks.

Summary
The Rivertown streets were rough, uneven mud, tramping dust into buildings in summer and squelching underfoot in winter (and any other time it rained). Sez knew them better than her own heartbeat, these alleyways and ramshackle homes, and Sally knew Sez’s heart almost as well as her own.

Summary
Somehow she always forgot how much brighter and closer the stars were out in the desert, whenever she travelled elsewhere. When dusk fell and the moon rose, looking close enough to walk right up to, her heart gave a warm little twist of homecoming - home wasn’t a place, it was something she carried in herself, wherever she planted her feet, but these shifting sands were the steadiest place she knew.
The engine in her battered truck had broken down yet again, but Miz Eliza considered that a problem for later. For now she sat on the cooling roof and mapped stories into the lights and spaces in the sky.

Summary
George isn’t sure when, exactly, they start living together. Not in the same house – but lives wrapped around each other, inhale and exhale.
When it becomes natural for her papers to be in neat piles next to Jill’s scrawling heap on the desk in the sitting room of her tiny flat or on the kitchen table in George’s even smaller one. When the cats know George by step and Jill knows the trick to getting the cranky stove-top to work and they both know exactly which cupboard everything belongs in, no matter which house they’re in.
When she starts saying ‘I’m off home’ as she leaves a lecture, a study session, an afternoon helping at the soup kitchen, and means 'I’m going to see Jill'.

Summary
The Giantkiller peered around with bright eyed interest at the mossy floor, the gnarled tree trunks, and the no nonsense glare levelled at him down an arrow.
“You know, back home? We say your territory is only as big as the area you can keep safe.”
Maid Marian raised one delicate eyebrow, unimpressed.
“And everything beneath these trees is ours, boy, so answer the question.”

He’d been told all the years of his childhood that mages were selfish, had to be forced to share their wonderful power, had thought on guilty, sleepless nights of the unspoken power pooling at the tips of his brittle fingers - and all it took, in the end, was someone saying please.

Summary
After Laney ported her out to deliver a letter and an apology four years in the crafting, Jill sat at a bench in Sally-Anne’s fish shop and realised she didn’t know what to do next. She had been a gleeful scientist, once - still was, in the depths of her heart - and then she’d been weighed down for years, smuggling secrets out in invisible ink and living with a hundred choices haunting her steps.
