"Slytherin would do well, help you on the path to greatness," the hat seems to be coaxing him, but for something that can read his mind, it sure doesn't seem to know him very well.
Harry doesn't want greatness. He doesn't need his name in lights and on everyone's lips. He wants meals, hot ones, whenever he wants, with people that he likes and that like him. Friends he can have adventures with, huddle under the blankets with at night and laugh with. People who might think… think he's worth something.
In which Harry is sorted into Slytherin, and Snape deals with the fallout.

Summary
Half-blood, they say, like it's a curse. Harry tries to understand, but then, he doesn't want to. Doesn't want the twisted logic to make sense - doesn't let it. And he's glad he hasn't, the day he finds some Ravenclaws cornering another firstie in an abandoned hall, throwing words about weaker magic and tainted souls, mixed-breeding and corrupted lineage. They're taunting and towering, and he sees some hunted look in her eye and a shimmer on her cheek and when they raise their wands at her, he raises his and steps in-between.
In which Harry struggles with bullying and blood prejudice, but ends up making a new friend.

Severus eyes Potter with interest, but the boy's lips are pinched tight, shoulders hitched, and he's staring at the ground without saying a word.
