Summary
“You don’t have to hide from me, you know. I will not bite you.” The man’s voice was soft, thick with an accent that Nott could not identify. He didn’t look over in Nott’s direction when he spoke, just kept looking at the window.
Nott didn’t move from her corner. She liked corners in general. No one could sneak up on you when you were in a corner. Though, now that she thought about it, being in a corner meant there was no where else to go if someone was in front of you. Like everything that might offer Nott safety, there was always a catch.
“My name is Caleb,” the man said. “Caleb Widogast.”
“I’m Nott,” Nott said, because that’s what you were supposed to do when someone gave you their name, you gave yours back. Besides, talking to the stranger would at least help distract her a little.
There was a pause. “You’re not what?”

Summary
Nott had been with Caleb for months now and she seriously wondered how Caleb had survived being on his own for so long. He had an almost goblin-like distrust of people and a mind clever enough to think of cons to bring in coin, which had to account for some of it, but otherwise? His weak human eyes couldn’t even see in the dark! He was prone to near crippling headaches and spring colds, and he’d forget to eat if he had a new book he was reading.

Summary
Veth had been told all her life what she was and what she wasn’t. She was not pretty, not smart, not normal. What she was was ugly and stupid and weird, flinching at shadows, carrying buttons in her pockets that rattled when she walked. It had been the easiest collection to carry with her, and she had liked the sound they made, liked how they felt in her hand, round and smooth. When the other children had teased her (coming out of the shadows with their twisted goblin smiles), she would put a hand in the pocket with her buttons and try to focus on the feel of them instead of their chants and jeers. Still, as much as she had tried not to listen, their words had worn her down, like water wearing down rock.
