Summary
Charlie’s never given much thought to having a dad.
Well, he’s aware that he doesn’t have one, and after Aunt Mary told him what happened before he was even born, he’d been glad of that. Who would want a dad who would do what his tried to do?
Besides, his mom has always more than made up for being his only parent. There have been a few times he’s seen other kids with their dads and felt a wordless, shapeless sort of want, but it’s not really possible to miss what you’ve never had. His mom has been the one to cheer him on at baseball (until he finally worked up the nerve to tell her he hated it and wanted to quit), to work through his homework with him, to look at his drawings, to tell him goodnight and good morning, to brush his hair back from his face when it gets too long and help him pick out new glasses and help him get through hard levels on video games and all of the stuff a parent’s supposed to do. She’s good at it, all of it, and he’s never felt deprived.
Which means it’s exceedingly hard to figure out where the heck Joel Miller is supposed to fit.

Summary
She gets her other samples with probably a little more haste and a little less smalltalk than she usually might. Mom, Aunt Maria, Grandpa Frank, Grandpa Bill, and even Kevin all give samples, only Ollie spared on account of being a toddler. All of them turn blue, just as they should.
All while Ellie’s remains damningly yellow.
Back in her workspace in the clinic, she stares at it for a long, long time before she pushes herself out of her chair to go collect another.
