“Huh,” she says. You watch as she slides the pad of a slender fingertip along the stick in her hands. The gesture creates a sort of dry buzz inside of your head; you can think of nothing except a life you knew as a human, where rough calluses humored your own muscles, tightening and relaxing against the skin of your wrist. “You and I contradict, do we not? You feed off their attention and I would kill for them to look elsewhere.”
“We make a good pair, I believe,” she says, with a twinkle in her eye that you have heard similar in Dozer’s own tone. It suggests that she knows something you do not; that she is making your nativity a joke of its own accord. “Like magnets. I used to play with magnets when I was no less of a sinner than the rest of the humans—I would make their repulsing ends stick together like tied twine.”
“Yes,” you repeat, and she tilts her head up like she is grinning with her full heart. You know that she cannot see it, but you offer her a soft smile of your own. “Like magnets.”
