Summary
Elizabeth stood in line at her school, her fingers cold despite the cramped space. The entire student body, about 900 students, was assembled in the school’s auditorium, in separate rows: three lines of 100 students each for the first, second, and third years.
Faintly, she could hear gunshots, like background noise. Those who were hiding and refused to play. The government never did tolerate that sort of disobedience.
It was time for the annual game of Duck, Duck, Goose, the government's messed-up way of population control, to begin.
Each student was handed an envelope. After the supervisors left, each group of 100 was sent off to their respective buildings. Then they were instructed to open the envelopes.
Elizabeth did the same.
But when she opened hers, her blood ran cold. She might die in her very first year of high school.
Because written in bold, clear letters across her ID card was:
GOOSE
Fake your tasks. Reach your daily kill quota.
Use the secret passageways and sabotage the Ducks.
And most importantly, don’t get caught.
