Ever since the marriage between Jiang Lian and Jin Zixuan, Lan Wangji has been making regular visits to the Burial Mounds to deliver letters. Wen Ning reflects on how this has changed things at the Burial Mounds, and in particular the effect it's had, and continues to have, on Wei Wuxian.
Once the newest batch of letters are dispersed to their intended recipients, Wen Ning reads A-Yuan's letter to him from Jiang Lian. And later, all the residents of the Burial Mounds get together for dinner and some merry-making, and Wen Ning observes Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji growing closer (read: pining ridiculously).

Lan Wangji follows silently as they enter the cave. The silence between them stretches but Wen Qing doesn’t offer any more information to fill it. Lan Wangji can hear faint clattering, the rustle of paper and once he can make out the light coming from the main cavern, a hissed “fuck.”.
“Wei Wuxian.” Wen Qing says. She is intentionally heavy in her steps and her footsteps echo louder as a result.
“What? Is something wrong?”
“Your Hanguang-Jun has come to pay you a visit.” Wen Qing stops them before they round the corner.
“Hangua— Fuck!” The loud clattering increases followed by the sound of a drawer slamming shut. There's a loud crash from inside that makes Lan Wangji wince. A metal disk rolls around the corner and circles Lan Wangji’s foot before falling and rattling around with another horrible sound. “Uh— Tell him I’m not here. That I went out to run some errands. I'll come around the back entrance and show him the way out in a few minutes, I just need to—”
“Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji says.
“Fuck! Wen Qing! I didn’t think you meant he was right beside you! why didn’t you say something?!”

Lan Wangji is the only one who has faith in Wei Wuxian. Who doesn’t feel the need to be on guard in front of the feared Yiling Laozu. He sees the immature troublemaker in the master of demonic arts, a harmless person only after a laugh, not a bloodthirsty murderer like everyone is declaring him to be.
Wangji doesn’t feel the need to be alert at his friend’s presence, choosing to trust him with all his heart.
So when he is betrayed, he has no one else to blame.
At least that is what Wuxian tells himself every night.

Wei Wuxian is swaying but Jiang Cheng refuses to look fully at him, too angry about the arm. He hears a soft "Jiang Ch..." behind him as he begins to descend the mountain. Then a soft sound like falling.
The disciple in front of him points behind him and says "Sect leader he..." but Jiang Cheng dismisses him angrily.
"Ignore his theatrics! He just wants the attention. He's no longer my problem! Let's go!" and refuses to allow himself to look back at the brother who had abandoned him.

In another world, the ground ends up even more soaked with blood, the Wens are all slaughtered but for one, and Wei Wuxian dies, torn apart by the fierce corpses he once controlled.
But this is not how this story goes.(Wei Wuxian ends the First Siege in a much different way. The Cultivation World is left to try and understand it).
