Summary
The bodice he has more trouble with. As he pulls his arms through the sleeves, he is forced to admit that this was never going to fit him the way it is meant to fit a woman: if he tugs it into place to sit on his broad shoulders, the lacing at the front is pulled too short to tie; if he wants to fasten the lacing, he has to let the bodice fall off his shoulders.
He looks at himself in the mirror once more. In a strange way, his bare shoulders give the impression of one coquettishly undressing, maybe for a…for a lover.
Buckley finds a dress.

Summary
Buckley gasped and felt almost dizzy looking down at the blade against his throat, his pulse was hammering away against its steel edge. He froze. In his mind flashed images of the blade stabbing through his skin, he thought of unnatural penetration, he thought of tearing and bleeding. He felt strange again.

Summary
The fury of him had been frightening. More animal than man. So physical it made his blood race to think about. Tommy’s hands gripped tightly in his bright, white, shirt. God he had been scared. It was not like boxing. Blow after blow, striking him again and again. Like he was soft sand and Tommy the waves. Reshaping and reducing him.
Pain is the reminder of mortality and mortality is the reminder of death. But pain also reminded him he was still alive, the dead do not feel pain. The dead don’t feel anything.
