Rhyme Hartley moved to the Outer Banks when she was seven years old from London, England. Her parents are still together, but it was just her and her mom that moved to the U.S., with the occasional visit from her father.
Once Rhyme started school there, she immediately started getting bullied by Sarah Cameron for her name among some other things. So Rhyme moved schools.
In another new school, she meets JJ Maybank, who becomes her new best friend. They grow up together, but at sixteen, their friendship goes to shit when JJ gets with John B and Sarah despite knowing what Sarah did to both Kiara and Rhyme.
Shortly before being moved back to England, JJ and Rhyme sleep together. After moving back, they move again, but to her father’s home country of Australia, where they move to the Gold Coast where he’s from originally.
In Australia, Rhyme learns she’s pregnant. And finds out mermaids are real. And becomes friends with three of them. Rhyme keeps her pregnancy a secret from JJ and all of her friends from the Outer Banks and has her baby towards the end of her junior year.

The full moon was a real danger. From Cleo's siren song almost drowning the teenagers of the Gold Coast to Rikki's wildfires, not having control over their actions combined with heightened powers and mer tails, the full moon always meant chaos or exhaustion.
So, when they ran into Zane the morning after being moonstruck, the spoiled brat looking pissed as hell, Rikki knew deep in her bones that this was going to be bad.
