Update Edit: Rewriting this as soon as possible! Sorry that this hasn’t been updated in so long 💔
One of the worst and most rare stages of the Tox was the incubator stage.
Every girl dreaded it, and the few prayers that were said every night were sure to be asking for ward against it.
Hetty thought it was over, that they had somehow eradicated this stage.
Yes, girls were gone, their babies missing, but that was a small price to pay for the horrors Headmistress and Welch described to them. It's gone, but Hetty must've been born underneath an unlucky star, because its inhabited her. Reese knows that if anyone finds out Hetty is gone, disappeared like the girls before her, and probably more girls in the future. But they just pretend, pretend everything is fine, just like they have for God knows how long.
They're living in a glass house, and when it eventually breaks, they'll be left to pick up the pieces, their hands cut and their faces ashamed.

Summary
Reese didn't know what to feel when Byatt woke up.
She just felt cold, as Hetty tore herself away from her side, cradling Byatt's head in her arms like it was the most precious thing in the world.

Summary
The ocean is a cruel place.
Hetty, Byatt, and Reese are all gone from Raxter, but the pieces they carry of it will eventually drag them down. They are nothing but a small vessel in an ocean of change, their stories lost to the waves of time.
Broken ships, broken bodies. What's the difference?

Hetty. Byatt. Reese.
Hetty and Byatt were obvious. Inevitable. They fit together, filled up everything empty inside each other.
But what about Reese?
Reese didn't have anyone.

Summary
My parents called me today–using the old landline that’s in the west wing next to the principal’s office. Does anybody even use it anymore? I thought it was out of service, but I guess not. Uh, they talked to me about stuff. I haven’t seen them in a while. I usually stay here during the summers, because they have summer classes and my parents say I need to ‘further my education’. Oh, and they want me to keep practicing violin. I haven’t played that in so long. I think I forgot how to hold it. It’s weird to hold though, and it’s so uncomfortable–oh my God, I hate that instrument. Don’t tell my mom I said that.

Byatt Winsor has some troubles sorting out her feelings–and who isn't told by their therapist that journaling helps? This is her first time keeping a diary. It probably won't go well, but for what it's worth, she comes to terms with her love for her roommate.

It never really tastes great, does it?
–★☆★–
She had much, much more energy now than she had back on Raxter. She felt like a whole new person. She felt like a person that didn’t have to conform to shit anymore. She got so used to being quiet, to being and acting happy and putting on an idiotic fucking front, that she’s only slowly starting to relearn her roots. Her years of causing chaos and nearly going to JDC, of committing small and petty crimes and fucking up other people and getting into fights. Damn, she misses middle school Byatt.

I risked my life to save her, because if I didn’t, what life would I have?
–★☆★–
Reese Harker and Hetty Winsor are back on the mainland. It isn't all it's cracked up to be, if they're being honest. But they have Byatt back, even if she's not herself just yet, and they plan to make the best of it.

Summary
Maybe the wild already in her was enough. Maybe one had fought off the other. Maybe the Tox itself had been in her from the beginning, waiting quietly to be awakened, a part of the island and a part of her. And when it finally came, easing out through her skin like a truer, fiercer version of herself, she was sorry that it stopped so soon

Reese is still little more than a child, but it's time for her to let down some walls.
